Battle background
After the battle
On March 1, several armed ships of the French army anchored on the Qiliyu sea outside the seaport of Lizhen. French Lieutenant General Gu Ba took a small ship to conduct reconnaissance. The Chinese garrison stationed in Baoshan found that he had opened fire and fled to the New York in a hurry. Wu Jie directed the fort on both sides of the strait to open fire, hitting the headmast and stern of the New Yorker. The two sides fought for five hours, and the French ship left.
On March 2nd, the French ship came again and fired at Zhaobao Mountain and Jinji Mountain. Admiral Ouyang Li saw the policy of not firing at one's own side and not firing at the French army who followed Shangfeng's policy and did not order a counterattack. Wu Jie
Repeatedly demanding that he be confronted as on March 1, Ouyang Lijian used military law to suppress him and not allow him to fight back.
On March 3rd, Wu Jie felt that he could not bear this absurd order, risking being dealt with by military law, personally entered the Zhaobaoshan Fort on the north bank and aimed at the French flagship "Baya". Since the French ship has not been fired back by the Qing army, because the enemy has entered the effective range of the Zhaobaoshan Fort, Wu Jie's shelling broke a beam of the bow and mainmast of the "Baya", and then the French fleet withdrew from the battlefield.
For more than ten days thereafter, there was no incident. On March 14, the French ship came again, but because it did not dare to approach the shore of the Zhaobaoshan Fort, it only fired from a distance with artillery. The stalemate remained so until April 9, when the deputy general Wang Litang led a death squad to secretly ambush the eight new-style breech copper cannons on the protruding part of the north corner of Jinji Mountain on the south bank.
In the early morning of April 10, the French ship still struck. Wang Litang fired unexpectedly. Five shells hit the French ship. At this point, the French ship saw that it was unable to obtain benefits, and left Zhenhai to end the battle.
Campaign impact
The Battle of Zhenhai achieved the only victory in the modern coastal defense battle, setting a glorious page in the history of modern Chinese warfare. The Battle of Zhenhai effectively attacked the French invaders and defended the Chinese waters from infringement. It was one of the important battles for the Qing army to defeat foreign invasions.
